Comics without the fuss

Like the comics I put out, but hate wading through all of my inane drivel? Thanks to Tumblr, some handy recipes from IFTTT, and a little bit of DNS magic, I’m proud to present Absurdist Comics, a stripped-down version of Absurdist.Org with nothing but the comics. It comes complete with its own RSS feed for your subscribing pleasure. You’ll also notice that I’ve added a “Comics Only” link to my main navigation bar, so that you can access this new mini-site at any time.

Fickle, fickle, fickle (or, more changes!)

I realize that it was only 2 months ago that I decided to merge my graphics site here, but it seems I’ve already changed my mind. For those of you that came here looking for premade layouts, tutorials, web design resources, reviewer reviews, and the like, I’d like to direct you to PIXEL(YES), my new web design site. I’ve migrated the more…helpful and design-oriented of my blog posts there. It will probably be updated somewhat sporadically. Every since I merged in the premades, I had been feeling a bit uneasy about the whole thing. The site just felt a little too schizophrenic. I think things will work out better this way. For now, there will be “Resources” link in my navigation bar to PIXEL(YES), but that will likely be taken down in a few weeks.

Now that that’s out of the way, I’ve got a new layout up! It features my own cartoon-style self-portrait. It’s a bit different from my usual work, but I like it a great deal. You’ll notice that this layout is, for what may be the first time in my design history, a fluid-width layout. It also makes use of @media to display differently depending on the width of the browser viewport (and so is also mobile-friendly). Futhermore, it’s coded in HTML5, thanks to a little help from the _s starter theme. Overall, I think it’s pretty slick and fitting for my vision of the direction that I want to take this website in. As always, any comments, feedback, or criticism is welcome. My intention is to keep this layout for long time to come.

UPDATE 9/4/12: Absurdist.Org now also has a brand-new Facebook page! “Like” it to have updates from this site delivered directly to your newsfeed!

New layout: “Pencil & Paper,” and site changes!

Pencil & Paper I know it’s been quite some time since I last updated– I have to admit that 3rd year got the best of me. But I’m back, and I have a whole year in the lab ahead of me which, as you can probably guess, means that I’ll be working sane hours. First things first, I’ve treated myself to a brand new layout, featuring a notebook picture that I got from PublicDomainPictures.net. I even included some of my own pencil swirly doodles!

The other major change, as you may have already noticed, is the new Premade Layouts section. I’ve merged over some of what I consider to be my best non-JRock designs from Neogrotesque. I’ve found that premade layouts are really the only graphics that I love to make, and will probably shut down Neogrotesque in the near future in favor of a single unified site.

New layout: “Whimsical”

I know that I didn’t have the last layout up for long, but, for some reason, I got tired of it. Something about that odd shade of orange in the sidebar… I don’t know. Anyway, I’m rather happy with this new layout. It features a flower photograph, which I got from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Image Gallery.

Any comments, criticisms, and suggestions are welcome. I’m open to making small changes, though I probably won’t be willing to do anything too drastic.

I finally caved and got Twitter

Back when Twitter first came out several years ago, I swore it off and relegated it to the ranks of MySpace (which still scares me to this day) and Facebook (of which I admit that I was an early adopter, but which, in my opinion, has since become unnecessarily bloated with all manner of random games and useless apps). Despite having blogged on and off (though mostly off, admittedly) for the past 10 years or so, I never really caught on to the idea of keeping track of what my friends are doing every second of every day, much less the idea of announcing what I’m doing every second of every day. Call me old-fashioned.

So what possessed me finally to register for a Twitter account? Well… I realized that Feedburner could automatically post my blog entries there, so anyone who wants to follow me can do it without me ever actually having to touch the thing!
